I Feel Worthless

I've turned into what you might see as a lonely housewife with nothing to show for her life, even after having attended a prestigious college in hopes of doing what she dreams of doing. Now I'm stuck wondering if that was the right move, because nothing but student loan debt came from it.

Why aren't you doing what you went to school for?

@Pherick I went to school for music and ended up not being good enough for a performance major. I found out 2 semesters before I graduated that I wouldn't be able to become a performance major unless I tried for a master's degree, and even if I tried the teacher (who was on the Jury Committee, 2nd chair of the Orlando Philharmonic and 1st Chair of Bach festival) told me she wouldn't sign for me because I had a lot left to learn and wasn't standard yet. Plus I didn't have the standard posture and am still working on it. So they put me into the "Music Concentration" degree, which is a fancy term for Music Education. I never wanted to be a teacher. I also minored in Creative writing and that in itself has been like pulling teeth to do anything with because it costs money to have it edited (money I don't have), and a whole bunch of other hoops to jump through.

@PoisonLace I am sorry to hear that. That seems like something a teacher or advisor should have told you after the first year.

I went to a college with a very good music performance major, and I know those students were taking tons of classes and performance reviews from Day 1. So they should have known pretty quick what your chances were.

Have you tried out or looked for any private music gigs? Or community bands? Something that would allow you to still perform?

@Pherick I've thought about starting an ensemble, but my music contacts are all busy. Luck of the draw I guess.

@PoisonLace What instrument do you play?
PoisonLace · 41-45, F
@Pherick Cello. I also compose and had been taking Piano lessons but have forgotten most of it and am not serious enough with Piano to start paying for lessons. If I had that money I'd put it towards Cello. :)
