Coronavirus: Isn't it illegal for a merchant to refuse a cash payment?

I was in a store today and tried to pay by credit card. My card was declined. I said to the merchant, "I'll have to pay cash." The merchant said, "I'd prefer if you pay by card. Don't you have another card?" I said, "no." So he accepted my cash. But what if a merchant says, "I will not accept cash--only credit card." Isn't it illegal for a merchant to refuse cash? If you look at money it says, "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private."

I would leave the stuff and walk out
It was a drug store. I was paying for a prescription. I couldn't go to another store. I needed my meds.

I don't think so. Hotels don't take cash, right?
@BlueVeins Looked it up. You're absolutely right. The law requires that a merchant accept U.S. dollars -- but those U.S. dollars can be electronic payments, not cash.

Federal law makes U.S. currency a legal tender for paying debts. As a small business owner, you must accept dollars for your products or services. This doesn’t mean paper notes. You can accept electronic dollars as payment.

Private businesses can create their own payment policies, including ones that restrict cash payments. You can say that customers must pay with a credit card, check, or money order. You can also ban large bills at your business.

Bottom line—you can accept payments in whatever form you want. Here’s why:

No federal law requires businesses to accept cash.
You only need to accept cash when someone owes a debt. If the customer pays before you provide the product or service, you don’t have to accept cash.
You need to establish a cash payment policy before a transaction occurs. You can’t change your policy mid-transaction or refuse someone’s paper bills when you say that you accept cash. As long as you tell customers upfront that you don’t accept cash, you can refuse cash payments.[/quote]
Aren't stores allowed to state their preferences???

Even the government advice recommends that businesses go with card payments where possible.

Try to keep in mind that they are trying to keep their employees safe and working so that you can get what you need without risking their health, their family's health or anyone else's health. All currency is potentially contaminated and could make them sick.

Is that bill really to die for, because that's the choice that it sounds like you are expecting them to make here???

We are in times that we've only ever seen before with the bubonic plague - and look what that did to people and lives. It's understandable that people are going to be scared right now.

It's only a dept if he accepted the cash and allows you to take the goods.
Nobody wants the increased risk of handling cash.

Many times I've had shops here in England refuse to accept Scottish bank notes.
@Entwistle Haha!! Don't have that problem in the States! Kinda funny.

Shopkeepers are starting to refuse cash as some numpty told them the coronavirus stays active on it for some time.
As a result, many are refusing to take cash and will only take a card provided it's chip and pin and all you have to do is swipe.
@Picklebobble2 But is that legal?
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@flipper1966 Well, they'll say they can refuse whatever they like !
Technically i suppose you're right !
It's legal tender. They are in business to accept legal tender.
It's just these idiots in government freaking them all out !

That is true,they have to accept cash here in the UK. However a retailer can just refuse to serve you...they don't have to give a reason. In fact they are likely to be in trouble if they do give a reason.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@Entwistle Only up to a certain point. You cannot for example pay a £500 bill with 2p pieces. There is a maximum beyond which they don't have to accept it 🤷‍♂️
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@Quizzical That's true enough.
Lapochka · 31-35, F
No they can choose who they serve
BlueRain · F
I don’t think it’s illegal.
ThePerfectUsername · 70-79, M
I doubt there's a law that says the merchant's obliged to accept cash which he has reason to think may be contaminated with a life-threatening virus.
JoePourMan · 61-69, M
In this time of crisis, yes they can refuse cash. Money carries more germs than just about anything you handle.
@JoePourMan Are you a lawyer? 😂
He should wear gloves tho if he’s scared to handle money.. @JoePourMan
ever see a cashout person lick the money and rub it over their face before putting in the draw?. 🤔

we cant eliminate the possibility i guess..
is there another shop who does like Green?.
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout It was a drug store. I was paying for a prescription. I couldn't go to another store. I needed my meds.
@flipper1966 so she dont want to handle your cash. but expects you to handle what ever product shes been fingering?.

id be pointing out 😇

KFC are cashless. no card no chicken.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
It cant be much fun if you have no card or can't use one.
BlueRain · F
