Near Freeport Maine there is a a desert that is partially natural and partially poor aggricultural practices.
First the desert technically had been there hidden after the last glacial movent grinding everything down to a very fine sand. Over time the top soil completely covered it.
In the early 1900's a family moved in and started farming the lands growing potatoes mainly. They completely neblected to turn the crops and allowed thier cattle and sheep to overgraze the soil. With little to hold the top soil together the sand underneath started slowly coming up and claimed the land. Starting with a spot the size of a dinner plate eventually overtaking 40 acres.
The area gets plenty of precipitation but the damage can't be undone. That said the pine trees have adapted to dealing with the problem by growing their trunks down some 50 meters under the sand to find the water for thier roots. The trees seen around the desert are only the canopies of these massive trees.
