nevergiveup When my parents went to school (back in the '30's and 40's) if a teacher had an occasion to paddle them, they went ahead and did it, then informed the parent or guardian and they usually got another one at home. That was "old school" thinking. By the time my older sister went to public school, teachers were forbidden to lay a hand on a student in any way that constituted punishment. I can hear my mom saying today, "If any damn teacher lays a hand on my kid, I'll kill him or her!"
My poor father. He got kicked out of Catholic school in the fourth grade for mocking backtalk to a nun. Grandma put him into public school and he tried the same thing there - and promptly got kicked out again. He never went back to school. (In those days, they didn't keep track like they do today.)
