I Got The Slipper At School

I think part of the reason why the whole calm measured ritual of school punishments (which, the odd stroke of the slipper in P.E. aside, I never got) so fascinates me, is because the only childhood spankings I got were in violent anger from my father.

That's why I think the whole ritual thing appeals to me: order v. chaos.

@ArishMell i fully agree vwith you that such a punishment was not justified, that is of course the poor performance was due to talking. UI di have to agree that some, very few, teachers did get personal satisfaction of whacking some boys bottom, more so if it could be done bare. It was often pe teachers and if they did it for personal gratification should have been locked up. Mind you some teachers did it for minor things knowing the boy was not putting any effort into the task and a cracx with a slipper would "encourage" more effort. These two types of teacher should not be confused

No, I don't confuse the motives, but the teacher would have to have been sure the boy really was being lazy and not in fact able to grasp the subject properly.

And if the latter, can we be sure the teacher himself was really just poor at teaching and/or at making the subject interesting enough for anyone to try to learn?

I remember a letter on a radio programme not very long ago, from a retired Headmaster who admitted that school-children in the past were often misbehaved because, frankly, the lessons were so boring!

(I think they tended to rely on rote-learning more than understanding: make the subject and lesson boring, and no-one can be expected to learn anything.)

@felicity and if it is a proper leather sole slipper not a gym shoe, if applied jut across thin shorts, or like when i was at school, across yur bare bottom it was dreadful for a few minutes.

@chikki rather than making me afraid of the teacher it simply made me more resentful and reactionary towards that particular teacher. Perhaps this was because my parents spanked me for misbehaviour far more severely than any of the teachers did.

@Tuscan as a deputy i had to slipperor cane many a boy in 20 years. I do not think it caused resentment. The boys knew they had deserved to be whacked and the teacher was correct in sending them We did have a list of standard punishments for certain offences and knew if they were going to be caned or slippered and how many whacks. They also knew if it was the first time in the office for a whack that school year it would be on their pants but if they had been their before it was pants off and the slipper or cane use on their bare bottom. Their were no exceptions and they regarded it as fair.
Also, no expections were made depending on the boy. If he was a lad thad was never in trouble he would get the same impliment on his bottom with the same number of whacks and hit just as hard. Many a time with three of my four boys at the school where i was deputy they felt the school cane and slipper on their bottoms. I was always fair and treated all boys the same. Yes, they dreaded having to come and be whacked but at the same time rather than resentment their was respect

@chikki I can only speak about my own feelings, there was genuine deep respect for all the teachers, without it I doubt if anyone would have submitted to physical punishment. At the age of 14 when I left school I was physically larger and stronger than almost any of my teachers, but the thought of resisting any of them punishing me never entered my head. Except for my last day at school when I walked out rather than submit to a punishment I considered not merely unjust but decidedly spiteful.
I received corporal punishment on more than a dozen occasions I don't think I felt many of them were either fair or justified at the time, although I now realise that they, for the most part, were.

@UncleJlovesbrazil reaching over the vaulting box most times where he would make you pull your shorts down and administer two real stingers on your bare bottom. Our class was about 20 most of the time and on average two boys got it each lesson
