US copyright duration for characters has been extended multiple times in the past few decades, often just in time to keep Mickey Mouse out of the public domain. However, it appears that the days of extending copyright timrframes are over (https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2019/01/a-whole-years-worth-of-works-just-fell-into-the-public-domain/), so Mickey Mouse should enter the public domain on 01/01/2024, albeit the recreation of works with the character may be more restricted than 1 might initially think (https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2019/01/a-whole-years-worth-of-works-just-fell-into-the-public-domain/).
