I Got Caned At School

I attended a very old fashioned girls' school for the daughters of expats in sourthen Africa. I was caned five times in my six years at the school. Once each in second, third and fourth year and twice as a fifth-former. The cane was used only for the most serious offences (playing truant, serious insubordination). I got mine mainly for truancy and out of bounds. You got six strokes from the headmistress in her office, bending over a chair or her desk, skirt raised, through your knickers, and yes, it hurt a lot.

The cane was used only for serious offences at my girls school in the UK as well. I got caned on the bottom twice and I can remember a chair in the head's office which was mainly used for girls to bend over!

@Rebecca54 I think most schools claimed the cane was only used for serious offences or when all other methods had been tried and failed. Not all of them stuck to that in practice though.

@Lynda70 In my school it tended to be used more for the more serious offences but it definitely wasn't reserved only for them.

@Sharon A common phrase was “in the last resort”. But at my school it wasn’t that at all, it was for certain specific offences for which caning was deemed appropriate. The most serious offences were punished with suspension. A boy who was suspended wasn’t beaten, unless by his parents.

@MartinII Much the same at my school, definitely not "the last resort", quite often the first one.
