I Got Caned At School

I can remember this picture appearing in the papers of girls protesting against caning in schools. Unfortunately for us headmistresses like mine didn't seem to take much notice of such things!

And here we are a bit older, a bit wiser. Still abuse is the wrong track to follow. Our world is filled with abusive beatings. If the school were to do this to MY child I would certainly report 'THEM' The School. Abuse needs to stop! Needs to cease. We need to speak up and tell these kids it is NOT okay! The children need a VOICE. And we should be able to at least defend our children!
Speak to an adult that has been through parochial Schools and commit to a change in their policies.

It's certainly a remnder of the days of short skirts! I got three strokes of the cane for wearing my skirt that short alng with 12 other girls on one occasion.

Funny to think that the young ladies pictured are now mature grandmothers in their 60s, probably complaining about the clothes their granddaughters are wearing and telling them that they should get the cane as they did in their day!

Absolutely! How time flies! @jackcros:

@jennypenny That was one rule I never had to worry about!

Also around that time in the newspapers, there was a school where some of the pupils went on strike over school conditions.

When they returned to school, those that had participated, were each given the cane.

The revolution was crushed by the ruling class.

It's quite a famous picture. There was a statement that went with it, saying that the girls were protesting because they were frequently spanked and caned, including by male teachers, and often on their bare bottoms. The school released a statement saying that their behaviour "would not be tolerated" and that they would be "severely dealt with" on their return to school. What that meant may be left to the imagination.

@1olderguy20: allegedly. I've always thought there may have been an element of exaggeration

Now had chance to try looking this up. The image appeared on the rear cover of a book entitled "The Corporal Punishment of Schoolgirls" by Margaret Stone, a factual, statistical survey of the subject. My information above came from the cover notes to the same book (which I no longer own). I can't find those notes on any of the google entries for the book, so we're relying on my less than able memory for the content. One of the google links however connects to a series of news stories for the time, suggesting that this incident was part of a much wider movement, which was certainly not mentioned in the Stone cover notes. So don't take my post as gospel.

@JosieM: thanks for the follow up

I went to an all boys school in the sixties and we got at very regular intervals by sadistic bastards. The tails I could tell.

I recall seeing catholic girls wearing their skirts way to high. Was long long ago.
jackcros · 70-79, M
@Carla1951: I recall that in my school days in the early 60s. We boys at catholic boys' school thought it was marvellous, we even had a saying "Convent girls is randy." Juvenile male fantasising of course 😇

What year was that pic?
jennypenny · 70-79, F
1972 a pupil power demo @1olderguy20:

We're you ever caned? I hear it's terrible
jennypenny · 70-79, F
Yes it is. There are worse things though. @1olderguy20:
skimpyboy · 56-60, M
would not be surprised if they were not lined up for the cane after that
Sharon · F
@skimpyboy I attended regularly and offended frequently. ;)
skimpyboy · 56-60, M
@Sharon i had a few walks to the lady heads office during my first year for uniform issues
Sharon · F
@skimpyboy A lot of minor uniform issues were dealt with by the teacher individual teachers who saw them. Usually that meant a slippering in class.

I bet you were well behaved after being caned

No, Sir, I grew up in Southern Africa. Even in winter, it was warm, and the uniform didn't change. We wouldn't have dared roll up our skirts even if we could, though - someone would certainly have reported us. They did for other things.
