Flight

Waking from the strangest dream to hear the sound of the ocean crashing against the rocks. Enjoying the sound at first, then confused, then once my brain processes the situation, alarmed as I sit up in my bed. I look around at the wild landscape around me trying to figure out where I am.

I see that I am still in my bed, but what doesn’t make sense is that my bed was in my bedroom when I went to bed last night. The sound of the surf didn’t disturb me that much as I normally fall asleep to similar sounds. I’ve always found that listening to the sound of a thunderstorm or heavy rain falling or even the ocean crashing against the shore soothing and good for the soul while falling asleep.

But all that leaves my mind when I look around at my current surroundings. I’m on a beach somewhere I’ve never been before. It’s a cloudy day and the water is breaking violently against the shore throwing up large amounts of water into the air to my left. Behind me, as I sit up in bed is a forest or jungle. My mind is in too much shock to figure out which it is. To my right the beach goes on as far as the eye can see. To my left the beach turns inland with some rocks along the shore that the waves are breaking against. In front of me the ocean meets the sky with only water and sky to see.

I take in all my new surroundings unsure of what to do, my imagination takes flight as my mind races to try to figure out what happened and how I could have possibly gotten here. I must be still dreaming I finally decide and my heart starts to slow and I slowly relax trying not to worry too much about how I got here. Once again I look around to take in the beauty of my surroundings. It all seems so real, the sounds, the smell, the feeling of the breeze against my bare skin.

As my eyes turn to my left my heart speeds back up and I am shocked to see a beautiful woman on horseback...wait, that is a unicorn, not a horse. A gorgeous white unicorn, doesn’t seem wild at all though, seems very tame letting the woman ride it like that. I cannot see a saddle or any kind of tack, she is just sitting on the unicorn looking fearless and noble. The woman on the back has beautiful red hair and a lovely long blue dress making her look regal. She is holding a staff, giving me the idea that she is not a warrior but a mage of some kind.

I watch her not knowing what to do, mesmerized at how proud she looks. Afraid of speaking or moving or drawing her attention to me at all, but still knowing that she can’t miss me here sitting in my bed being the only things on the beach other than her. She looks at me and I hold my breath in terror...then I breath and relax as I see a smile grow on her face. After a few breaths she urges the unicorn to walk closer to me. As she reaches the halfway point between where she was and where I am she holds her staff in the air, I see her mouth start to move but am unable to hear her words. The staff starts to glow at the end, brighter and brighter going from a light blue colour to a dark purple so intense that I close my eyes a bit from the brightness. A short distance from me, the unicorn stops on its own and the beautiful woman points the staff towards me with both hands, I can barely see past the glowing brightness but I can see her hair start to stand out like a powerful wind is blowing it.

The glowing brightness becomes more than I can stand to look at and I close my eyes turning away and then all is silent and dark in an instant. I shake my head and open my eyes to see that I am still in my bed but now back in my room. I blink a few times and look around not sure what just happened. I get out of bed and see that indeed I am back in my bedroom and things seem to be normal. I have the urge to get a glass of water and I start to walk around my bed. I stop suddenly feeling something under my feet. I lift my foot up and brush some sand off the bottom of my foot and start to think maybe it wasn’t a dream at all!
