The screen door slammed shut as she threw on her leather jacket. She was ready to go and couldn’t wait to get on the road. There was still a crispness in the air, but the sun was shining, the blooms of spring pushing old man winter out the door for another year. She could hear the birds singing and the crunch of gravel under her boots as she made her way to the sleek ride loitering in the driveway. Her pride and joy was a twisted cherry Road Glide motorcycle, and she was antsy to feel the power between her thighs when she fired up the engine. It had been a long winter, and she was ready for spring, ready for the respite her bike provided.
She enclosed her packed lunch and book in the side compartment, put the key in the ignition, and felt that old, familiar thrill as the engine purred to life. She fastened her helmet, tuned to her favorite rock-n-roll playlist then eased out of the driveway onto the street. She could go the distance on this bike, and she often took long, meandering rides, avoiding the interstate, preferring the backroads and the scenery found there. She’d lose herself on those rides, enjoying the feel of the wind in her face, the sun on her body, the power of the vehicle she controlled humming underneath her. She’d stop for lunch at a park or near the ocean, and read her book before taking her time on the ride back home.
Now, as she kicked her bike into gear, her mind was focused on the road, on navigating the curves and going almost full throttle on the straightaways. She loved the rush of speed, her dark ponytail blowing behind her as she let out a whoop of pure joy at being alive and feeling the freedom of the open road. It was her escape, her solace and solitude. She’d waited all winter for this and was excited for spring, summer, and fall when she could get away from the weight of daily life and responsibilities and just enjoy feeling free, if only for a few hours.
@ChampagneOnIce i think the local Harley showroom is the only "shop" i have ever been in and felt "wow, I want/need one of these !!" 😊 - great writing thank you
@Peaches Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it and could feel it along with me. :) No worries on time. It takes me a while to get through all the posts too, but it's fun. I haven't written anything for this week's challenge yet. Maybe I'll have time on Sunday. :)
@ChampagneOnIce 🏃🏼♀️I saw you had another weekly challenge story, I need to run over and read that one too.👀😉

This is great! I'm afraid of motorcycles and reading this made me want to get on one! I could feel the thrill of it in every word you wrote. Thank you!
@ChampagneOnIce Thanks. I’ve come to really look forward to it each week. I love reading what everyone comes up with, but moreso the sense of community and support from the participants.
@SW-User I don't own a motorcycle, but I've ridden on the back of one a few times. I love it! This story is fiction, but if I had a bike, it would be reality. :)
@BexEyes They used to scare me too, but it's more about the one who's driving and the other drivers around than the motorcycle. I like riding back roads as opposed to freeways.
