I Work Full Time

My work life just got curiouser and curiouser.

This morning, my boss announced that he’s leaving for another job.

That was unsettling. He’s one of the better bosses I’ve had; and our company’s contract is up for recompete. Does he know something we don’t know? (Or does he just like the idea of a very good job a lot closer to where he lives?)

Then, this afternoon, my boss’s second-in-command approached me about possibly changing my duties. This would be a lateral move for me, not a promotion. I would be doing different tasks for the same company, on the same contract.

I’m a little apprehensive, because I’m introverted; and the past 5 years have been so crazy, I’m now full of doubt and scared of my own shadow. This job involves more contact with people.

OTOH, I don’t always have enough work to do in my present role. What if they were thinking of eliminating that position and laying me off? This shift to another position in the same company (and on the same contract) is preferable to a layoff.

It would involve learning some new things and getting a bit out of my comfort zone. OTOH, even with my fear of change, I confess I *have* been bored at work for awhile.

And, it’s always good to have more experience on my resume in a field that’s in the same industry. That could improve my job prospects in the future.

I did ask if more money would be involved; and he fudged. So maybe not; but the money wouldn’t be any worse.

I’m tempted to say yes. Thoughts?
Kat I would say reread your own analysis. you have thought about various aspects which are important to you and which only someone there could know.

I say your analysis is soynd because it was written by a Smart Kat 😉

Do try it and be looking for opportunities outside, as well.
I'd say yes and broaden your horizons and abilities. This may be a favor granted to you.

It seems a good opportunity and if it were me, I’d be tempted.

I would say give the new position serious consideration. The company I last worked for was famous for moving people laterally to build breadth of experience. Those that did not move laterally did not move up.
It sounds that possibly they are giving you some protection.

The downside is you would not be bored and posting during the day. Our loss.

Sometimes a change is just the jump start we need to break us out of a rut. I can understand being a bit nervous about the change, I think anyone would be. New experience on the job is generally a good thing. You are the one who would know the negatives involved.

Reading what you've written, there are a lot of pluses to accepting the new position, and several minuses if you stay where you are.
You can't grow without change. Go for it!

Go for it. The challenge will be good for you and so will contact with more people. Being bored at work is depressing in itself.

It sounds like you have things well under control. A temptation worth giving into.

As long as they are not taking advantage of you and heaping more responsibilities on you without a pay raise, then yes, go for it! Proving yourself versatile to an employer is a good thing.

Say yes. Based on the information you provided, it would be better for you to move to this new position.
A very good job closer to home, and a better commute, is a great reason to change jobs.

Stay in touch. Who knows, might be opportunities there in the fugure.

A lateral move could be a good thing, and likely build your experience base.

More money would be nice. Same contract, but is it at the same location?
