I used to use very large sticks when I played drums and they would tear the shit out of my hands. I used to tape up my hands before I played. They were the kind of callouses that keep your hand or finger from opening completely and hurt like f**k, but in the heat of the moment, you feel nothing. After I switched to slightly smaller sticks, the problem nearly vanished.
