Did you know that in the Middle Ages, when someone was executed

It was customary for them to give the hangman, axeman or guillotine operator a tip?

What?

Thank you for cutting off my head I give this place 3 stars...
@SW-User generous! 😅

That was to get them to do it right and quick and not entertain the crowd with your slow demise.
No, WAIT, I forgot my wallet...

Or, Your credit card has been declined, ma'am....
See there? A little remuneration might encourage accuracy and deftness. But you'd have to arrange to have a friend pay them AFTER the execution.
@sunrisehawk It's been almost six hundred years, but just reading about King Henry VIII's court scared me to death. If you ever saw "It's a Good Life" Twilight Zone episode where the spoiled little boy had mental powers that allowed him to do some really unique things, like turn someone inside out, and everybody had to be careful every moment:
that's what Henry's court was like. Heads ROLLED. Most of them rolled because he couldn't father a healthy son as heir to the throne.
@sunrisehawk That apparently happened with one of the Plantagenet women (the rivals to Henry's family, but it apparently happened because at the last moment she decided she wasn't going to make it easy for them, and tried to get away. A half-dozen or so swings of the axe, most of them connecting, but not enough to be fatal. The last one was, though.

Not a tip, they would pay their wages.
@Steve42 Well, in one execution I just read about, King VIII's representative paid the executioner's wages, but the woman being executed gave him money, too. And I've read about it before.

@Mamapolo2016 She probably gave the executor money so that he made it a quick death lol. I could imagine that in the Middle Ages.
Look at my new post about crime and punishment.

It was preparing the masses for paying the TV licence.

You want a rusty, dull axe? Hm?
Byron8by7 · M
"So, how is my axe feeling so far?"
Johnson212 · 61-69, M
Makes sense you don't want them cutting your head halfway off or not putting enough slack in the rope and have a slow death.
You all have made me realize that the last thing you want your executioner to tell you is, "this is my first time..."
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
I've been to social events where I'd happily pay someone to end it all for me.
@Harmonium1923 giggle. Me too.
The one being executed gave the tip?
Was it to ensure they were not left half dead?
@TwiddlerofThumbs I guess. it's not like they could anticipate repeat business.
antoniotomato · 31-35, M
Tipping doesn't mean the same thing anymore
@antoniotomato Nope. I think I'm glad. My brother was getting married in LA and the rehearsal dinner was held at a pretty jazzy restaurant. My dad, who lived through the Depression, said he'd take care of the tip. He left a dollar.

The waiter DID follow him out onto the street. They'd just served dinner and drinks to thirty people and got one buck. The waiter DID say, "Was the service not satisfactory, Sir?"
antoniotomato · 31-35, M
That's some fucked up shit.

People think tipping is this nice thing to do, but it used to be paying someones wage. There wasn't always these big companies that paid people to provide service to u.
lorne13 · 61-69, M
Well they didnt need money anymore, why not tip the poor bastard?
@lorne13 another excellent point. You can't take it with you.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
You want them to get it right the first time.
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
That is wild.
Especially the axeman---one wants a clean stroke, successful the first time ! 😳
@bijouxbroussard Yes, one would want to promote job competence.
caccoon · 36-40
The person being executed had to give a tip?
@caccoon I don't think they had to. They probably executed them anyway. If they didn't give a tip they got dead anyway, but the executioner probably followed them into the afterlife asking, "Was the service not satisfactory?"
Mrsbetweenfatandfit · 26-30, F
I guess hoping they’d do a quick clean job less pain?
