Have you ever bought a brand new car?

I've done it once, and I don't think I be doing it again...hahaha.
perish the thought someone else's ass in my drivers seat. not even a fan of a loaner car when mine is in the shop
dakotaviper · 56-60, M
@saragoodtimes True, but the Statehouse is controlled on both sides by the GOP. Let's don't get political here. I've been warned too many times by SW for my comments with that subject.
@dakotaviper forget I said anything

Both cars we presently own, and most of the cars I've owned, have been bought new. I've also purchased most of my cars with cash...haven't financed a car in years
@DragonFruit cash is always best when buying a new car
dakotaviper · 56-60, M
@saragoodtimes or a sizable down payment. I paid $25,000US down on my current Chevy Truck. My monthly payment is below $220.00US.
@dakotaviper we've bought 3 new cars in the last 2 years. our daughter will be getting her license next year and is already looking at cars
AndysLoft · 56-60, M
Most of the cars I have owned have been new...it is just a reliability thing. I have to say that some of my favourites were the older ones.

yes. but my partner also wanted a new car. so we compromise and bought him a car this year

You should always let someone else pay the first $10,000 😬

Yes I have done so many times over the years. The only bad experience that I ever had was when I bought a 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z in bright yellow paint. I drove it off the lot and before I even got 30 miles from this lot, the motor seized up. When they did the inspection after it arrived at the lot from the factory, they didn't check the fluids. 60 days later, I got my car back. Since I bought this car as a second car, it was mainly driven on the weekends. After 753 miles, the rear differential shattered. After another 30 days, I got the car back and within a week, I took it out for a local drive and it just died. Electrical short fried the electronics. I had the car 6 months and the I voluntary returned the car back to the dealer under the Lemon Law of the State I was living in at the time. It took almost a full year after that before I got my money back and my ownership of the car expunged.

Yes. I bought my car (a VW UP CUP!) 7 years ago brand new and it´s still driving without problems.

I always would buy a brand new car of this quality again! 😊
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@Loretta78 And especially if you live in a crowded city, those cars are going to be very nice!
Loretta78 · 46-50, F
@LookingForTheSummer Exactly! And it´s easy to find a parking space for them! 😊
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@Loretta78 Yes, I have a small hatchback, too. You can fit it anywhere! Haha

It's called Used New. I just bought a used car, 2000 Toyota Camry V6 XLE for $3400. That's right, $3400 USD. It belonged to his brother, who went into the army, and the car was sitting in a storage shed for 17 years or something like that. Only had 110,000 miles on it when I got it, maybe 5 or 6 years ago. It runs great!

I've never owned a brand new car, and would never want to. Toyota makes some great, very reliable cars. The trick with Camry is, keep up with the oil changes. My other Camry, 1997, that thing is up to 256,000 miles, and it still runs!

But most anyone with a good bit of savings can get used new, and I would prefer that over new.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
I’ve done it once
Ambroseguy80 · 51-55, M
@DeluxedEdition ugh. So sorry! I’ve had one totaled as well. It was my very first.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
A car can be replaced. A life cannot 😀@Ambroseguy80
Ambroseguy80 · 51-55, M
@DeluxedEdition this is true.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
The price of the purchase itself matters less than you think if it’s within your budget. It’s the resale that matters.

What’s the value when you’re done with it and how long will it last?

Ex. Buy a $20k Ford with a $2k rebate. Net $18k. Drive it for 8 years, put 100,000 miles on it and trade it in for $2k. Your real cost is $16k.

Or, buy a $22k Toyota with no rebate. Net $22k. Drive it for 8 years, put 100,000 miles on it and trade it in for $8k. Your real cost is $14k.

The Toyota cost you $4k upfront, but it paid you back an extra $2k. That’s one way to look at it. Another way would be to simply drive the Toyota another 6 years until its trade in value fell to $2k.

Longevity and being problem free is the answer in any purchase. Cars are not intended to be disposable. They are depreciating assets, but the concept of value does exist and can be relied upon.
ncgremlin · 56-60, M
I've only done it twice. The rest have been used.
Ambroseguy80 · 51-55, M
Yes I’ve done it about four times
FloorGenAdm · 51-55, M
People sabotage mine...key down the side, poured sugar in the gas tank, hit it with shopping carts, etc. After that I only get cheap ugly cars so they can have at it and I guess it's a win-win...can't have anything nice.

Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
Four so far. A dodge Colt, an Oldsmobile (junk), a Saturn station wagon (miss it), and my last Prius. The rest were handme downs, gifts, or used.
I had the opportunity but was almost debt free at the time and didn't want a large à payment each month. I bought a good clean used car instead.
Never bought a second hand car...
@Soossie yes, and the thought that if something happens the dealer will pick it up and drop a loaner at the same time
@saragoodtimes

Exactly.. very convenient..
@Soossie maybe pay more for a luxury car but the perks are worth it
SW-User
I have only purchased two used cars and both have been mistakes.
twiigss · M
@SW-User A girl I was childhood friends with, well she got a new car when she was old enough to drive, and the thing just gave her problem after problem after problem. Not sure what she did with it, but I do know it was nothing but headaches, on a never before owned so-called brand new car.
SW-User
@twiigss I've bought five new cars and only one (catalytic converter issue) problem among the years of driving them.

I know I'm in the minority of people who have had such problems with used cars. But two out of two attempts is enough to convince me that new isn't that big of a deal.

They always used to say that used cars drop so much in value after the first year. 1) That was with American cars and 2) I hold on to my cars for 6+ years (my wife's is currently 12 years old).
@SW-User My last car had some bugs. I think the issue was that it was the first model year of a major redesign for it.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
Once. The insurance was high. I'll keep buying used and pay cash.
@Crazywaterspring Yep, exactly. Your insurance will skyrocket after you purchase a new car.
dakotaviper · 56-60, M
@latinbutterfly Not exactly correct. It mainly depends on your driving record and the reputation of the vehicle you purchased. I just bought a new Truck last November. It's full coverage with no deductible insurance only increased by $7.00US per month versus the 2011 Truck that I traded in. And that's with State Farm.
ExtremeNext · 31-35
Just a toy one at the supermarket for $6
Lanyx · 41-45, M
Three times. But those days appear to be over.
SW-User
No never only used cars
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Oh to be able to do so!
Amberrose · 36-40, F
Depending on brand can get a new car for not really much more than a used one. I saw some used cars for 16 or 17000 when looking to replace my ladt car last year ended up getting a brand new car for 19000
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
I like saving my money to much to give it to someone else lol, I dont put much importance on cars, as long as it gets me from A to B.
Azlotto · M
Yes, but it was a truck.
