I Think Education Is Important

but.....I do think it's way deeper than that.. and that you cannot force those aspirations on those who do not value that.. Read this article this morning and it got me thinking about a subject I find i disagree with many people on... some perhaps well off people sometimes have, I feel, a poor understanding of poorer people and troubled families.. they seem to want to wave a wand and make it all fluffy and nice.. or they want to throw money at it...I think its way deeper and perhaps NOT about throwing money and time and resources, (not that you shouldnt offer those where they ARE wanted) but more about learning to accept that different people may have different values and not share your aspirations of good education, good job etc.. Anyway here's the article

There have been studies done, that you can't just take a "poor" family and give them money and expect them to do better. Most people don't go from poor to middle class overnight. It takes generations, to gain education, to learn whats expected from the "middle class" if that makes sense.

Like anything else in life, if you give money to people who have never had money, they have no idea what to do with it and end up wasting it.

Yes i replied something like that to my *professor* friend, who I Know is an advocate of bettering the lives of the poor. It's deeper... and yes, I suspect it can be done, but it would take a whole shift of attitude and they would need to see how it benefits them... and even then, I am not sure... are those who are rich and in *good* jobs happier than those who are poorer and in less flashy jobs? I have worked in a kitchen and the people there laughed and were happy despite doing a hard job physically for pretty low pay.. I now work in a college.. with educators.. are they happier? No i dont think so.. so i am not entirely sure people want to change... maybe we should accept their choices? Or else as you say at least accept that it has to be a gradual thing...
Oh and i do realise that a) SOME people DO want change and to better their and their children's life chances..they SHOULD be helped and b) that where there are people suffering, abuse etx as a result of poor environment and circumstances then yes intervention is necessary.

Well, yes, we can't all be highly educated, and trying to pretend otherwise is painful & wasteful. Society is always going to need unskilled & lowskilled workers, not to mention highly skilled non-professionals. Pretending it's a moral failing, and punishing people, for finding the realm they fit into, seems very stupid to me.

See that's what i think.. and i came from a very poor, troubled background.. and thing is.. people are happy living their life the way they want to.. they dont want the same things others do.. I was considered VERY odd because i loved education and did well.
