In England we put butter on our bread when we make sandwiches. Is it an uncommon thing to do in the states. Weird?

I grew up with butter on my sandwiches and immediately stopped doing so when I got to the USA because to me, it just tastes so bad with their ingredients. But my girlfriend doesn't do it even though in the UK we have the creamiest butter you could eat.
Butter on the outside for grilled cheese only.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
I`ve always done that. I`m Canadian of English ancestry.

Hope you’re buying creamery butter and not some lab produced abortion.
I grew up with buttered bread for sandwiches and do it yet today. Cant stand soggy bread.
CastorTroy · 31-35, M
@Quimliqer No, ours is the real deal butter.

Depends on sandwich, but rarely, now that you mention it my Mom did that, so maybe they did in early days?
The condiment of choice, here is usually mayo.

In Australia when i was a kid like 10 we used to put butter on bread.. But we changed to putting margarine on bread.. Then of course you add what ever it is you want to the bread..

Some people still use butter in Australia.. It is still available..

I have heard that US bread is not like Australian bread.. From what i have heard US bread is closer to cake then bread..
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@Adstar depends on the brand. I make my own bread.
CastorTroy · 31-35, M
@Adstar Yes, a slightly sweeter taste.
CastorTroy · 31-35, M
@Tastyfrzz Great. Must have a try at that myself.

I only put butter on bread when making grilled cheese - on the sides of the bread that cook in the pan.

Same here in Oz... Without butter it's just not right
FlowersNButterflies · 61-69, F
Butter with Vegemite, too? @ozgirl512
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@FlowersNButterflies I'm one of the 17 Aussies who are not fans of Vegemite🤣

As a Canadian, I have always known butter, or margarine, on sandwiches.
morrgin · F
I like it with peanut butter and jelly
I use mayo for sandwiches
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Grew up with butter. Then later switch to mayonnaise. Could still do either since my sandwiches are not standard sandwiches. More like double decker stacks of whatever is available.
chrisCA · M
@DeWayfarer Growing up on a farm, we always had butter. Margarine was seen as something as a novelty, like instant coffee, or frozen TV dinners.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@chrisCA actually mom never caught on to margarine until long after I left. And then it was fake margarine. 😆

Yes! "I can believe it's not butter"! 😁😈

My first wife put butter on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. She was from Holland, Michigan.

@chrisCA
Never thought about that. She had it on the peanut butter side but I see now why you might do it.
chrisCA · M
@Pfuzylogic Yes. I find that with many moist spreads, such tuna salad, butter has a practical purpose. Especially if you are making sandwiches early in the day to take to work for lunch.
CastorTroy · 31-35, M
@chrisCA It does .. ew.

Some Southern people will eat bread and butter. I've only like butter on my toast.
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
It's not that uncommon in the US, just far from universal.
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
Just on grilled cheese sandwiches that I know of.
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
I noticed the cheese in the US does not taste the same either.

@gatorgirl20 Ah. No ... I'm putting it in a sandwiche press... It's heated and toasts the outside while heating the filling... Great with cheese!
