How do nurses and therapists and suicide helplines do it?

How??? I don't know how but I have so much respect and awe for these amazing people. How do you go to work everyday to see so much suffering, shoulder through it, carry other souls and bodies through a surgery or a session...just....how do you not cave under the weight?

Same with nurses, EMS personnel, police officers in high-crime places, aid workers, the whole shebang. Lots of people everywhere with an apparently infinite amount of empathy, prepared to give their souls to help others day in and day out.

Some have a gift for helping others, some just read the script, and some don't do well at all - ending up needing the very services they are supposed to provide.
