He fights against evil, always. He chose to make his greatest fear into his strength, fear of bats. Even though he had a rough past, where he saw his parents being killed, feeling weak and helpless as a kid, he turned that into his superpower.. to always protect.
@Mystical True, it is always a choice, but we sometimes get clouded by our judgements and emotions and think that we dont have a choice when we blame other people or situations.
