Why do real estate dealers ask if we need the property for ourselves?

What's going on? The dealers won't give their contact numbers or reveal their agency names until you tell them that it's really you who needs it. And like why do they trust me immediately when I say "yes"? It doesn't make sense.

They might be asking if you already have an agent in which case they won’t waste time on you.
