Why do real estate dealers ask if we need the property for ourselves?

What's going on? The dealers won't give their contact numbers or reveal their agency names until you tell them that it's really you who needs it. And like why do they trust me immediately when I say "yes"? It doesn't make sense.

It's probably something to do with covering their own ass. Like, you can't prove that it's you who needs it but by asking the question and you answering them, if it turns out you were lying, then at least they are not at fault.

That's just a guess, though.

They might be asking if you already have an agent in which case they won’t waste time on you.
