I don't drink because I've seen a negative family history with alcohol and know I'd become an addict if I ever did

But it seems like when most people want to hang out/socialize/bond, they do so over a drink. I don't want to miss out on that but I know that I never want to try to get drunk

It’s fine to drink non-alcoholic beverages socially and very responsible to be mindful of the family history. Most people will accept and respect your decision. I limit myself to one small drink on the rare occasions I indulge. I have both a family history of alcoholism and diabetes, so I am careful.

It only takes a little effort to allot yourself just one drink, then switch to coca cola or water. What have you to lose to give that a shot?
@HurtMe That’s what I do, but not everyone in my family can. My youngest sister can’t even have one drink. My brother and mother don’t touch alcohol, they consider it too much of a risk.

@bijouxbroussard Ah, I see. Bravo to your brother and mother for recognizing it. It is likely that your sister will one day be like your mom and bro there too. Though do not take my word for it, lol.
You can be tea total and still do that,I did for a while bcs of medical reasons ,just have the mixers like coke, carbonated water or no alcohol beers /mocktails etc.

Stay away from it man. I’ve been an alcoholic for 20 years. It is a contention between my wife and I and at time of clarity I realize I’m missing out on a lot of the wonder of the world.

It's okay to drink non alcoholic beverages when socialising too. It's good you're not a drinker.

The main problem with many is they don't stop after just one or two drinks...they keep going until they are drunk.
My ex is an alcoholic and I swore I'll never let that become a problem for me... I learned it's okay to have one and just switch to ice tea or whatever non alcoholic drink sounds good to you.

Rules are your friend.

If you're hanging around people you know won't let you have "just one." Don't drink.

If you're with people you know and you can just do the one.... do it.

I discovered that the people pushing you to drink either have problems themselves or shouldn't be your friends.

Just because you mom/dad/uncle/whoever was an alcoholic does not mean your going to be one by default. As long as you keep the consequences in mind your unlikely to go wild with it

Just try it and if you don't enjoy it then just don't do it again

{@somedude] well that sounds reasonable enough and people will respect that
