Do you think some people are born with sociopathic tendencies or do you think they gain these traits throughout their life ??

cherokeepatti · 61-69, F Best Comment
I believe that some have some kind of inborn need to harm others. My sister is sadistic and my father was too. He grew up before and during the Depression but so did every one else of that era and he didn't have such an unusual life, he had good parenting. I think there is a genetic link but people still have choices about if they act on their urges.

I think maybe many are prone to them and have triggers that put them in the throws of it.

Could be envionrment, emotional or otherwise....

But...it's sad....regardless
Scary too!!!

I read a book recently, a memoir called,
MY LOVELY WIFE IN THE PSHCYOWARD....
Wow!
This lady was smart
and very sick
Made me wonder how many people I pass on the street dealing with the same thing....
Functioning as what appears to be normal....but so tormented.

@Thinking2much He went on to do more crimes that he got by with. The police did a sloppy investigation and he knew how to play every card he was dealt.
@cherokeepatti it's crazy how someone can be so smart to cover their tracks..... manipulate....scam

But not smart enough to see the errors of their ways
🤔
@Thinking2much We're all damage and life's situations at times drivers one over the edge of reality. Psychologically such a recent event in one's can trigger a dark path one has every taking for who looks innocent can literally tear thier world apart and those who across it!
[sep]i think predisposing is a big part of GD equation. From that point it's a luck of the draw as to whether the propensity to be sociopathic relays much on the rearing of the child and who and what the parents, peers or society does to further ascorbate. The disposition

When children are indoctrinated to have an entitlement view on society and the first time you say no it invokes these feelings and with enough indoctrination the lash out sometimes to the point of murder.

The evidence strongly suggests they are created by very abusive childhoods
SW-User
@cherokeepatti No-one is born abusive. The US is heavily sold on genetics but the evidence doesn't stack up. The social environment can also contribute
It's a very troubled culture

@SW-User I've seen things first hand that make me think otherwise, and adoptive parents who have never had a problem with their natural-born children have adopted sociopaths who first showed tendencies as soon as they could crawl. Remember seeing parents talk about the boy they adopted and he would bite chunks on their arms of their girls as soon as he could crawl, they told him he was adopted as soon as they thought he was old enough to accept it and that's when the death threats began, they hid and locked up the knives but he also threatened to burn their home down with them in it. After they did some research they found out his father was a criminal and in prison long term.

@cherokeepatti Your last sentence supports what I've said. And the adoption would also have had an effect. As said no-one is born bad. So much after birth is glossed over. In tge first nine months whatever happens will have a profound effect on the brain. Why the adoption? A perfect home? Obviously not

The research I have read seems to point to both being significant with the percentage of influences varying from one sociopathic person to another.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@greenmountaingal There is a specific genetic marker in men where a tendency to extreme violence is almost predictable, read that about one serial killer who had it.

I think everyone starts out like that but most people gain self-awareness and empathy when they're very young; a few don't.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
I think it is mostly the result of experiences in life combined with a certain type of mind. A recipe of things combined like ingredients.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Wraithorn I know it seems really dark but I like to read case studies of these criminals. I just cannot understand how people can enjoy hurting others that way and how they are driven to do so.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@cherokeepatti I also like to read such things Patti. They are seldom boring and the Human mind is really interesting. What some people do is shocking to the maximum but finding out their history and the reasons why will always be interesting. It's also useful to know why in case future tragedies can be avoided.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Wraithorn Need some way to screen people. My father slipped through the hands of the law for every evil thing he did. If they questioned him they'd let him go, he should have been in prison numerous times for the crap he did.

I think it's both...personality & environmental factors
whateverhappens · 26-30, F
Throughout life then again ive seen fucked up kids
AlphaCuckTX · 56-60, M
They are born that way. Brain scans and chemical makeup of the brain indicate it is not a learned trait or one which is a product of environment.

sociopath are created at a young age. you gain traits from your parents but its all about your environment and how you were raised.
littlepinklotus · 41-45, F
I think they are born that way but they develop them further through out their life.
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
I think they're born but over time outside influence plays a big role as well.
Jackaloftheazuresand · 26-30, M
I think their is an innate temperament for it if that's what you mean
SW-User
Mostly after birth, I think.

Probably a combination of factors?
