Most people seem to not be very religios these days.

So then why is it most people are still so hug up on getting married?

In my opinion, if you are a couple that lives together and has kids, you're married.

It doesn't matter if a couple refused to make vows at a church or in front of a justice of the peace. It doesn't matter if they don't believe in marriage and refuse to get officially married.

Marriage is so much more than the spiritual or legal aspect of it.

For me, nothing permanently binds you to another person more than building a family with that person.

If you are an intact family, breaking up is no longer a simple task. The kids don't know if you have a marriage certificate or not.

When two people build a family... they are just as married as anyone that went the traditional route.

My point to all of this is that, for many, I suppose the religious aspects are important but people don't need religion to have marriage. Not one bit.

That's just my opinion of it all.

Only reason I got married to my current wife was because she has a terminal illness and the stupid laws and rules that society has say that I can't be by her side through the really bad times if I am not her husband. I feel marriage is a terrible thing to do to someone you care about, but our overly religious society influences what is socially expected of us.

@gmatthewb I have to agree with that.
So he cheated the government but it’s not okay if the government cheats everyone else. They need to get paid? @LetmecumInside

@Greybare Interesting. So people who marry for love are incorrect? I hadn't thought of it as just about blood. Thanks for that perception.
One doesn't have to be religious to believe in marriage. It is a tie that binds two people in love.

Because social animals still value commitment without the sky man telling them to.

Also, the tax breaks.
Marriage has legal benefits. That’s why. It’s security.

Legalities, insurance, and tax purposes.

@DearAmbellina2113 So it's about the government getting it's pound of flesh more than anything else.
Nobody wants to go to church anymore.
