Hey car people...how long can a vehicle survive with an oil burning issue?

On my way home from work yesterday, I was driving behind an old and tired early 2000's Chevy Malibu that was belching blue smoke, which is a sign that it had an oil burning problem.

I drove my old car for about 12 months with the same issue. They had to keep cleaning the leaking oil off as it stank. Finally the smoke starting pluming out of the exhaust and it died a miserable death. It’s the 3rd car I’ve killed from my inability to put the correct amount of oil in a car

@latinbutterfly I did that with my first car, my mechanic was like you either need to sell it now or face it blowing up on you

@helenS I need a bike 🤣

@GLITTER Remember to inflate the tires! 😑

It has worn/cracked piston ring(s). They will run, but with reduced power output for quite a while but you have to keep them full of oil. If you run it dry it will die a quick death.
It is probably not worth fixing on a 20 year old car.

@OldMan70 Well luckily it wasn't my car. My current vehicle is only 2 years old so it shouldn't that problem...lol. Thanks for the tips, though.

It will limp for a while. With regular patch up jobs.

It is perfectly possible to run a diesel engine on old sump oil, which would give the emissions you witnessed. It would not however be road legal or in any way environmentally friendly. There are many ways in which lubricating oil can get into the combustion chambers some of which are more serious than others.

Depends on whether they keep topping up the oil ...

I know of a 98 saturn that I'll bet money will double its 260000 miles. As long as the current owner adds a little oil evey few days. And I'm pretty sure my 04 jeep that I'm driving now was burning oil before I bought it 8 years ago.
@Notanymore I haven't seen a 90's Saturn car in ages. Most of the ones that I see nowadays I think are from the mid-late 2000's.

@latinbutterfly i bought the thing at 220000 miles and tried to kill it for a coup of years

It depends on where the oil is coming from. But if you keep it topped up you might go a long time. Unless you fall foul of the police or an EPA check.
@whowasthatmaskedman Yeah, I doubt the car would pass emissions...lol.

@latinbutterfly Back in the day I had my share of cars on their last legs. Sounds like you may need to upgrade a little soon..
@whowasthatmaskedman Oh that wasn't my car, luckily 😂. Although my previous car was a Malibu with its own issues. Nothing compared to the that I observed, though.

It's not about how long it can survive. You must have it fixed ASAP. It can cost you a lot more later as it will surely cause major damage to the engine.
@LookingForTheSummer I can imagine, because the oil can't really be lubricating the engine in that situation.
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@latinbutterfly Exactly. And engines are costly to repair.
You better change the oil every six months.

I'd suspect if it hasn't seized by now it will soon enough
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@helenS true. I'm assuming the gasket is blown and the oil burning means soon no oil to lubricate and.... Hot things rubbing furiously together... Well only one way that'll end... 🧐🤨
@OldBrit I've heard a saying about GM cars, that they run bad longer than most cars run at all.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@latinbutterfly haha the old ones... I had a 74 Hillman Avenger I think sold in USA as Plymouth Cricket. That burnt more oil than petrol and nearly as much water. Never finally seized on me though.

You could drive a long time like that. Check your oil often to make sure it's not too low. You can also add some additive that helps with oil burning!

Until it won’t pass a smog test.
