I've got very specific Christmas gift lists from family members but...
I don't want to do it that way. Seems like a chore not a happy gift finding thing.

Agreed. Christmas gifts should be about paying attention to likes and dislikes and then making an educated guess as to what someone would like. Going off a provided shopping list takes all the joy out of it.
