Yes and it was a way for burglars to figure out if you were home, they'd call your number and let it ring and then drive over to your home and if they heard the phone still ringing then they'd break in. It was happening in the rural area where I used to live about 45 years ago.

Not that I'm lazy ;) but I'm thankful we'd don't have a landline any more - I love being able to ignore calls while I'm holding my phone
