I think that communism as envisioned by Marx has never been practiced. If I recall correctly, he described it as a classless, stateless society that would come about after late-stage capitalism led to a dictatorial socialism and then finally to communism. I can't think of any country that that applies to.
So I won't trash the Soviet Union or China or North Korea because I don't believe they're good examples of communism. But, all that being said, I don't believe communism is something that we should strive toward.
