I Hate College

I'm gonna have to write a book: Dear Hearing People. But this edition just goes to professors.

1. "You can't be deaf and learn another language"

-I can and I have but thanks for the confidence.

2."I think you're faking"

-This is after I've given you medical documents and you've seen my hearing aids...OK

3."You need to learn how to listen better"

-I listen with my eyes and my hands. I'm sorry my hearing has inconvienced you.

4."Prove it"

-talk to my audiologist.

5.I....said.....do....this

-seriously, slowing your speech just prolongs our conversation.

6. How....do....you....say...
This....!!!!

-If I couldn't hear you before why would be able to now....because you yelled and slowed down?? No you just simply pissed me off.

7. Please stop covering your mouth so I can read your lips. (The man did this four times and each time I said the same thing) #lipreading

To the professor that not showed they were frustrated with me because I couldn't hear the difference in what they were saying it only takes 60 seconds
For you to write the word on the board.

B P D sound the same (and same mouth shape)

Bo Mo Po sound the same.

Sssss and Zzzzzz sound the same.

Professors especially at hearing universities or hearing schools in general please understand we (deaf and hard of hearing students) are just as frustrated as you are. We work twice as hard and it is a battle. The belittling, disrespect, and impatience has to stop. I understand this may be your first time dealing with a hearing impaired person well it's my first time going deaf....To all professors dealing with deaf/HOH or anyone else with a disability take some cultural and disability courses to learn how to handle the student's situation please. If one more professor waves their hand in my face, treats me like I'm dumb or yells at me to "learn to listen" I will not be as nice. Everyone is going through something I understand that but a little kindness goes a long way.

@MalteseFalconPunch Nope, I was told my first day in the disability office "you study a foreign language no one is gonna want to interpret for that." That's how I was denied. Plus my professors are jerks they don't even bother to try.

@MalteseFalconPunch Yep, why is it too much to ask to just be comfortable going to class? No interpreter I can make handle but I should not feel miserable walking into the class because I know the professors are gonna be vindictive. C'mon

@MalteseFalconPunch Having patience is so important when teaching. Everyone won't move at the same pace or catch on quick. If you need an extra minute to get it, that's not gonna make or break their career.

@MalteseFalconPunch Tell me about it, a professor followed me into the restroom to scold me about her class which had ended hours ago. Then this same professor read a paper I wrote and said "I was really impressed, who wrote your paper". I'm supposed to be illiterate too. Ma'am go sit down. She's followed me when I was on the phone handling a financial issue like did education school teach that or did I miss something?
