Are old point and shoot cameras better than new smartphone cameras?

I have an 8 year old sony cybershot point and shoot camera that I hadn't used in a while, and a Galaxy note 8 smartphone (which came out less than a year ago). I took a few pictures with both and compared...they didn't seem like that much of a difference! But IDK.
Even a older point and shoot camera offers much more than a phone camera. The larger sensor and physical zoom are probably the two biggest points.
@AcidBurn There is something very satisfying about using manual focus....dont know what it is, but I feel more connected to it.
Plus they're great for action shots - you can focus on a moving subject so quickly.
@BoobooSnafu Exactly. The cameras in phones are getting really good. They serve their purpose of taking pictures that'll probably never be seen again... food, etc. They're also a great option for people who just want a decent camera for casual clicks. They have a long way to go to get to the point and shoot league.
@AcidBurn Ooooh Yeah. I think another thing people overlook - is that most digital photography is seen on a screen....it's rarely printed onto paper.

Nearly anything looks better on a screen....it has it's own luminosity. But capturing that light so it translates to a print - requires a lot of precision!

I took photos of some of my paintings.....and I think the photos look better than my work - they seem to have more punch.

I would think the Sony camera would be better.. I was employed by them.. Their products are simply top notch!

@MntoNcjust a Sony imperia ....Z5 I think. But I was surprised !
And - although it couldn't take a few on the morning above...coz of the light - I've managed to take portrait shots with it in pretty low light.
@fairone Thanks.....I was so glad the camera managed to pick up exactly what I saw.....these webs were so beautiful ......I only wished the sun had come out....then they would have lit up like little chandeliers !
It depends upon the type of photo you want to take. Modern phone cameras have a lot of auto tweaking on them to deliver an optimal standard photo - and they do an awesome job of this. BUT - if you want to start playing around with exposures, apertures, focus etc....there's only so much you can do.

Not that you can't achieve similar results with digital editing later. But with the old 'point and shoot' where you manually set everything......it sort of becomes an art form to achieve that 'ideal' shot - in one go.
It' loses some of the magic when you have to edit and play around with a photo to get the affect you desired.

It's an amazing feeling when you get it - that one magical perfect shot !

I have a purple Sony cybershot as well. The pictures from my Samsung camera phone looks better for some reason.

@SW-User if you look at my photo album with 6 photos, the only one taken with the cybershot is me in Barnes and Noble. The others are with the note 8. What do you think?

@MntoNc You're right. I couldn't tell the difference.

@SW-User Samsung is also a superior product
Because they’re not that different. The technology used in smartphones are all over saturated photos. Especially on Samsung phones. The S9 is no better even with 2x optical zoom on either lens.

@MsAnnThropy I think point and shoot cameras have better low light photos
@MntoNc I agree - I've had this problem too.

You should take a picture with Huawei p10 pro...

@TheButterfly The note 8 is probably better

@MntoNc It really is not
