The astronomical odds don't help my opinion on it. However we hardly have any kind of acceptable sample size for life on planets. Mars had bacteria, so that's the only other example we've got to create an idea of what's required for it.

It is entirely possible that there is life out there and it is entirely possible that there is not life out there. Life as we know it took some very very carefully crafted criteria for it to come into being. In fact someone has said the odds against life's spontaneous arrival is greater than the number of atoms in the know universe. How he figured out how many atoms there are in an infinite universe he never said.
