I Like Myself Better When I Drink

This sounds bad. But drinking, being buzzed, it feels like it solves all of my problems. I know it doesn’t obviously. I know that’s dangerous thinking but it’s true. I don’t feel depressed when I drink. I don’t feel any negative feelings when i’m drinking other then the obvious hangover the next day.

And the thing is I’ve been through a lot of medications, I have been medicated for being bipolar, medicated for having an anxiety disorder, for depression and alcohol does 100 times more than prescription pills ever did.

I wish alcohol wasn’t my only solution for these problems nothing really seems to work quite as well as drinking. Really wish I could just find a medication that suits me so I don’t have to think about this anymore.

This is the way it starts where it seems like alcohol solves everything. It doesn't last however and you end up with even more problems to deal with. I used to have a real problem with alcohol is how I know. When I first started, I thought the same as you. Like many of us who end up in AA or jail or losing everything we have, I was wrong.

Alcohol helps a ton with anxiety..just be careful. It so easily hooks you and anxiety returns with a vengeance

@QueenOfZaun I have the same problem. I make myself go without alcohol for a few days just to kind of keep myself in check. My anxiety actually gets much better the second day, the third I have to have another drink.

@Joker I do the same exact thing. Last week I went on a seven day alcohol binge and now I’m keeping myself sober the last three or four days just to stop myself from going even further with it.

@QueenOfZaun Good. I know exactly where your coming from and exactly how you feel. You are not alone.

This sounds very familiar. PM me if you want to talk about the pros and cons of self-medicating. I don't have any answers... just experiences of when it went right... and wrong.

maybe try learning to actually deal with your problems and move past them instead of looking for something else to instafix them , because alcohol isnt a solution, its just another problem then in then end will compound everything else.

@Joker Im not trying to be a dick either, Ive had very close people who were alcoholics for all my life, Ive watched alcohol destroy life after. Alcohol isnt ever a solution, any doctor will tell you that, its a symptom of a problem. One of the biggest problems we have these days is people inability to take responsibility for their actions or do the work with themselves needed to grow and move past their issues instead of just wanting something to fix if for them.

Remember alcohol is a depressant, it doesn't help depression, just gives a way to act like you can forget about it.

@Kazuya69 I understand that. Alcoholism runs in my family so I too have seen people destroyed by its grips. On the other hand i also know first hand what crippling anxiety feels like. The way it is explained and read in a book doesn't even touch the surface. Alcohol isnt the solution but it does help. I have tried meds and they are horrible, I'd rather be a drunk.

@Joker You know its interesting my dad thought and felt like what you just described until he stopped drinking alcohol entirely, took over 22 years btw but afterwards he always talks about how all the anxiety he use to have that he thought drinking helped was mostly there because the drinking. I know it might seem contradicting, but anxiety is part of alcoholism and its not when your drinking its the brain wanting the drink. Btw it is genetic.

Problem is first you have to figure out why you have anxiety, cant just address the symptom.

The brain does anything it can to feel good, and so something that makes you forget your pain and anxitey will be addicting to the brain.

You won’t find the answers in drink.
