I Grey School Short

I was driving home yesterday through Midhurst in Sussex, and noted perhaps a 11 or 12 year old boy with his father. He was wearing a dark blazer and mid thigh length grey flannel school shorts with long grey socks. He looked very smart and was laughing at something his father had said.

Though I did not wear school grey shorts to school beyond the age of eleven. I wore them for best as my preference was to wear shorts at home nearly all the time and sometimes, I needed to wear something neat.

My usual neat look was grey shorts and open neck white shirt, sometimes closed with a tie. In the winter I wore my shorts with a V neck jumper and sometimes a blazer.

I used to enjoy wearing my grey shorts and wore them at every opportunity, right through my teens-alongside all my other more casual shorts.

@strictshorts Yes, shorts are very pleasant to wear though I feel the cold rather easily so don't wear them as often as you. I have only about four pairs including by a quirk of domestic history my original school PE ones; but also a pair of modern PE shorts smart enough to wear in public.

They must be mid-thigh (like my PE shorts) or shorter of course - ones I wear at home are shorter - not these something-and-nothing mid-calf creations apparently inspired by photos of Grandad rolling his trousers up to paddle in the sea.

@ArishMell Well luckily it is possible to get men's shorts of a decent length these days. I have a variety of lengths from just above my knee to very short. My usual length is about mid-thigh or a bit shorter (Sometimes depending on the situation very much shorter).

@strictshorts Two of my pairs are actually old trousers cut down; but I am no tailor, so not very well! They are about as short as some of those in your album, but looser-fitting; and sometimes I tie the sides up a bit higher.

Well, at least as far as I could tell driving past, he seemed perfectly happy and comfortable. Also yes I think shorts are coming back, mainly from boys them selves. They are not seen as they once were i.e relating to being grown up or not.

@strictshorts Might be encouraged by there being a lot more men wearing shorts now.

There is one boy who attends the high school near me who wears short trousers and he always looks smart

@strictshorts Very true I remember the case in the summer of 2018 when it was red hot and a school refused to allow boys to wear shorts so a lot wore skirts

@skimpyboy Well there was the famous example of that at a School in Exeter if I remember correctly.
