I Want to Know What You Think

A tribal woman has a young child, but his Father is elsewhere. The woman works as hard as anyone else in the tribe to provide for herself and her child.

A man in the tribe with no family to provide for knows this about her. Being a fisherman, one day he offers her a fish. This is the only exchange between them.. he simply has more fish than he needs and asks if he can give her one.

The woman provides for her family, but she could really use this food.

Should she take the fish? Or is there more involved?

Take the fish and then ask to be taught how to fish and depending on the man who seems to be good hearted will do just that so she truly can provide for her family in many ways.

@Robinsinwinter: I am only considering the information or lack of that you share :-)

Ok.This actually happened. It was a guy at the gym, he is a fisherman, and he really did offer me a fish. I accepted at the time for the same reason the tribal woman might, and I was grateful as hell. It was a beautiful fish!
Afterwards there was a lot of buzz in class about what exactly that meant. I didn't think it meant anything. He was being kind. I always share if I have more than I need.

@Robinsinwinter: So in the situation for yourself, if that guy offered and you accepted i do hope it was just a kind gesture from him and nothing expected in return IF there was shame on him.

[c=#7700B2]Whether there is more involved would depend on the customs and traditions of the tribe! For example: If there is an unwritten rule that "accepting a fish" means "I promise to repair your canoe whenever needed for the rest of my life" she should think twice.[/c]

Excellent point. If there is a social meaning to accepting the fish, she is unaware of it.

Take the fish ... and be grateful.
Take the fish and offer thanks to the fisherman whom gave it. ☮

I'd hope she wouldn't let the suspicion and calculation of befores and elsewheres spoil an act of generosity. What if she sours his taste for giving?
