Grandma’s Cherry Garden
Talking with my dear friend and sister Soossie the other day I was transported back to my Grandma’s cherry tree garden. I would get to spend some summers with her and my Poppie in their home in Michigan. These summers are my fondest memories.
My Grandma and I would take morning and afternoon tea at a little white iron table and little white iron chairs in the center of her cherry garden with a few apricot trees on the side. Here I was allowed to dream and share my childhood fantasies of what any 7, 8 year old girl wants I dreamed of castles, ponies beautiful princess dresses, rainbows and unicorns the sky was the limit under those bright red cherries. (Maybe this is why red is my favorite color🤔)
It was nice to go back in my mind and taste the chamomile tea s it passed my lips, and smell the cherries and the apricots in the summer breeze. When we’re finished and the cherries were rip and read to pick she would fold up her apron to make a makeshift sac me on the step latter picking and filling her apron full.
Then into the kitchen to make pies, turnovers, muffins and preserves. Every year we would spend days turning the cherries and apricots into delicious treats then load up a little red wagon, and start down the neighborhood street. Stoping at each house up and down the block we’d give each neighbor some of our treats.
We left with a wagon full of apricots and cherry delights and returned with a wagon full of wonderful confections made of apples, peach, rhubarb, strawberry, blackberry, blueberries.
raspberries. I remember telling my Grandma how I couldn’t wait to have tea and enjoy some blackberry jam in her Cherry garden.
