I think they had some important privileges too, not just "rules". A housewife of 1950 had many children - her pride and joy. And the children had to do what she said. Children were obedient, loved and respected their mother.

The principles are sound, it is what I grew up with so it was natural for me to enter that sort of marriage

Here's the list:

1. Husband gets to have sex with wife whenever he wants - headache notwithstanding.
2. Husband can beat the shit out of wife for any reason.
3. Husband controls all of the money, gives wife an allowance that she uses to buy groceries and other household items.
4. Husband can fuck whoever he wants, but if wife tries that, husband can kill her with no consequences.
5. If husband comes home at 3 a.m. drunk and dishevelled, with lipstick on collar, wife must be happy to see him and ask no questions.
6. Wife must put up with mother-in-law with no complaints whatsoever.

There are some basic or generic rules on the internet. I believe it depends on the two individuals entering that relationship. They should discuss and both be in agreement before any serious relationship should is established.
