Why do tennis player grunt when they hit the ball?

They act like it takes a great effort. You ever hit a tennis ball as hard as you can?

It is called CHEATING, as the opponent cannot hear the spin of the tennis ball
@nedkelly hahahahahah 🤣

@OogieBoogie Australian tennis great John Newcombe once referred to grunting - then in relation to former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova - as "legalised cheating".

Martina Navratilova calls grunting "cheating, pure and simple" and wants tennis to ban it sooner rather than later.
@nedkelly seriously! 🤦‍♀️

I read an article about that. Apparently grunting gives them more energy and boosts their performance.

@SW-User Much like the martial arts, or weight lifting.

@chrisCA I think it applies to our everyday life as well. When you’re in pain, you grunt or groan. It’s a reflex, but it helps you tolerate the pain.

I read that it's to put the other player off so that they miss their serve. As a spectator i find it really annoying and some are so loud it's just ridiculous.

It's obviously a psychological thing.
I mean if you make that noise during a serve it gives the impression you hit the ball as hard as you could.
If you are receiving the ball you then have to 'counter' any 'strength' the server gained from them doing it....

Quite why it's allowed at all is sad really. Most manage-d quite well over the last 100 years without feeling the need to.

@OogieBoogie Does neither explain why they do it nor why its allowed does it ?
And what the hell does a delivery ward have to do with either the question or my answer ?
@Picklebobble2 ok ley me spell it out simple like.

Yes it does lose force,...
E=mc2 man. It physics... It's sorta a basic law of the universe.
I can't tell you why it's allowed, but it may have a little something to do with that it's a natural instinctive response when you throw everything yoy got into a physical act.... Which brings me to thr relevance of the maternity ward.

Or maybe it's freedom of speech

🙄🤷‍♀️

@OogieBoogie Both irrelavent to the question
Mona86 · C

@Mona86 yup. 👍
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
Maybe it’s a battle cry like CHARGE!
JessicaVl · F
Just to call attention 😏
Peppa · 31-35, F
Isn't it a distraction thing for the opponent or just the dumb shit like some men do when being all macho and competitive in the gym...
