I Love Old Movies

So Universal are planning to reboot all their stock of old monster characters.

When I read that Tom Cruise is starring in The Mummy and that Dwayne Johnson is to be cast as The Wolf Man, then I feel straight away these films are heading in the wrong direction.

Hopefully they will be entertaining in their own right..maybe.

However those monsters where largely a creation of make up artist Jack Pierce who designed the characters looks that have become iconic.

Everyone knows what Frankenstein's Monster looks like thanks to his designs.

By creating versions that do not look like the originals you basically are making a whole new thing.

They did The Wolfman in 2010 and although they made a good attempt to resemble the original design the movie itself was poorly directed and written.

I feel the new versions will be similar.

Still I will wait for the reviews but I don't expect I will be surprised that they have "re-captured the magic" of those early movies. That would require talent and imagination to revamp it and stay true to the originals.

When you consider they can take Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman and make a right mess of these decades old characters with a wealth of stories and development then why should the Universal Monsters be any better served by modern Hollywood?
