Lots of people try and manipulate others in an effort to get what they want.

Some people think the “real” them is inadequate, so they concoct a more exciting, interesting or impressive persona. Others I think do it as a pretense to get something from others.

I chalk it up to those people either being very insecure, mentally ill, or looking to take advantage of others in some way.
