Is race a biological category or a social construct?

Smtwn829 · 36-40, M
First you have to define it. Without a clear definition that every one can agree with the argument is meaningless.

race: a category of humankind that shares certain distinctive physical traits.

This would mean that blacks, Asians, Germans, Russians, etc... would be considered a race. though in some cases it would be a little more loosely used since there is a lot of interbreeding. Since most people cant be bothered with specifics of race beyond the color of their skin and more distinctive features such as Asians.

so it is basically boiled down to white, brown, black, Asian. this would make it a social construct mostly due to people being lazy and just lumping most together.

There are specific biological factors that can be used to identify every race though. these are traits developed and passed down over generations of living in different climate and with different environments. These factors also play a roll in medicine and health care. You wouldn't treat a German for sickle cell anemia since they characteristically don't posses it.

Social construct. There is the human race, socially divided by ethnic groupings.
There is only modern anatomical Homo sapiens or human species. The superficial phenotype or “outer layer” differences, however striking to the ignorant, doesn’t put humans into categories except for “cosmetics”.

So, race, is a social creation, originally put into place for subsistence.

Obviously skin color can be inherited biologically, but the reason behind race being a social construct is that all of our skin is the SAME :o

It has the capacity to change based on radiation input that forces the body to defend itself with the release of melanin. This is why you can tan. A white person can literally turn brown from hanging out in the sun. So the idea then becomes, what IS race if our skin cells are like LCD pixels? 🤔
It can CHANGE races?

@SW-User this is the reason we have so many nuts
There are characteristics of one race to another that can't be changed by the amount of time you spend in the sun ,,,you can change skin color lighter or darker even genitalia ,but you can't really change who you are ,,a blood test and a swap of the mouth reveals it all ,,,
if there was ever a good example Michael Jackson ,,was he man or woman
black or white ,,,we knew the answer ,,Michael was the only one confused

@rckt148 that is true :v
And as time progresses, people flourish with an abundance of new traits and mutations. It is part if life, dude. However, skin color is what we use for race, and that can CHANGE. The idea becomes a matter of what else can we use to determine race .-.

It sure as heck would give a variety of different races, then

@SW-User No Dude that is not the only way we determine race
I take it you have never seen a Chinamen and a Vietnamese and a Filipino or Mexican up close ,,
Lack of experience you only see skin color ,,,contrary to some beliefs
Not all white people and people of color look alike
And African can have as many color blends as Americans ,,but there are culture differences
Some people see me and know right off the bat I am Indian ,and what tripe
But 99% of the people only see a white guy ,,I am Sioux ,Cherokee ,German mixed ,,,but people who see more than the color of my skin can see ,,,
I am more Indian than white

yea thats the way we are headed ,,30 something genders ,why not race
insanity seems to be contagious
Both. Although race among humans is actually a myth. Humans are all the same race but there are biological factors that make some ethnic groups appear different from others. When this myth is perpetuated to treat such groups like they are their own race, that's when it becomes a social construct.

It is considered a social construct by the anthrpoligist but it has to have a biological basis or different colors would be spread out among everyone.

Mainly social, it's debatable if there are biological differences that define race.
indyjoe · 56-60, M
It's a biological category turned into a social construct.
SW-User
Social construct. It is a completely meaningless word in biology.
wakanda4eva · 26-30, F
It's a competition on who can be the best

social construct
St0ut · 51-55, M
Depends on use
Both. Although biologically we have much more in common than not.
