Was Robert E. Lee a good general?

I think he was beyond good. One of the greatest in American history. I would say there were more exceptional corps commanders. Stonewall Jackson. Nathan Bedford Forrest. Grant himself described Forrest as the greatest military strategist the Civil War produced on either side— north or south. The one thing Lee lacked was the long game strategy.

Yes, probably one of the best! He inspired others to be their best by example.
