As much as I hear about the wage gap I never hear any solutions.

It's a genuine question I'm asking here. What should be done to close the gap? What laws and regulations are needed to ensure women are paid the same as men? I'm honestly not trying to start a fight with anyone. I know that regulations aren't going to be the entire solution to anything but I genuinely have no idea what other things people are proposing. I'm trying to understand both sides of the debate and I want to know what the proposed solutions are.

*******EDIT********

I should have included this but I'm a derp and I'm generally pretty bad at communicating my meaning. I realize the debate is whether or not it even exists but here I'm going assuming it is real and asking for the proposed solutions.

I can only speak from my workplace which employs about 25,000, but while women and men are paid the same here, statistically it shows that women are paid less as they are more likely in a relationship to take time off to look after the kids which drops their overall annual salary and even with paid maternity leave which is a percentage of their actual wage, while they are away for a few weeks or longer, they are more likely to be overlooked for promotion than their male partner which then shows that more males are in higher paying positions, so that also affects the pay gap with out it actually being down to discrimination.

@MalteseFalconPunch I'm sure that there is a wage gap as opposed to an earnings gap in some work places and parts of the world so yes, I'd be interested in hearing what the solution is too. I think you'd have to force a company to pay equally so that would come down to Government regulations then having it enforced with the company being fined if they were found to be discriminating and for that to happen, there would have to be an independent investigative body that could demand to see the companies payroll books and to issue fines etc. I think we have a similar system to that here.

@MalteseFalconPunch Yes I see, it's against the law here too. All the wage disparity issues I've heard about here are not gender based but just companies underpaying everyone in general. Like you I'll be interested in seeing what more is needed.

If they do exactly the same and same hours and Holidays times all same and others, then the pay is the same.

Equal pay for equal work and equal experience and time served. However, the last two are frequently overlooked in the argument.

What I feel needs to happen, is not closing the 'pay gap' but eliminating the stigma of discussing everyone's pay openly. When we all openly discuss what each other is paid, it'll start to hold employers feet to the fire to ensure that people (men and women) are getting paid properly.

@MalteseFalconPunch My feelings are also presented on what I think should be done.

I don't know. I mean, laws to make sure women are paid the same as men for the same work is probably a good start, but the whole thing seems so vague to me that it's hard to tell where it even starts and ends.

@MalteseFalconPunch That's kind of a bullshit situation, honestly.

Women who have the same education, same experience and get the same annual reviews are already paid the same as men.
