Can Governor Abbott have Democrats arrested when they return to Texas?

He says he will have them arrested and brought back to the capitol so the voting restrictions can be passed, and his argument is that legislators have to show up to work just like everyone else. But is it legal to arrest someone and force them to go to the capitol? And since when is it a crime to not show up for work? Are Americans workers or slaves?

Actually they are abandoning their post. Fire them if they don't show up and appoint someone else. Do your job.

@JonLosAngeles66 I'm with you Mate - near SF myself.

@JonLosAngeles66 protecting voters by allowing non voters to vote and voters to vote multiple times with no checks or balances are not voting rights. It's called fraud.

@MasterLee Their “bosses” are their constituents. If their constituents disapprove they can “fire” them when they’re up for election again, which I assume is November next year.

They were elected to serve in the legislature. There is a big vote coming up, and all signs point to it passing. The Democrats don't want that, so they are absconding in an attempt to delay, or prevent the legislature doing its job, and passing bills for the state of Texas.

They can absolutely be arrested. I don't think they can be tossed in jail, but arrested and brought back to Texas to do their duty?

Yep.

OK.

Well this situation is more of a publicity stunt, then some sort of dereliction of duty. You think its feasible to impeach and recall a motley crew of legislators from all over the state? Its expensive and difficult.

These people aren't fleeing permanently, its a political ruse.
If he does, he’s helping their cause. When you’re willing to suffer for your convictions people respect it. Walk the talk.

I hope so, sick and tired of the liberal games.
Those pesky liberals wanting everyone to vote!

Supposedly there's something in the Texas Constitution that specifically allows it. I have not read the Texas Constitution, so I don't know first hand.

He's being dramatic for the views. He can have them escorted and detained at the Capitol, but not actually or legally arrested.

As deplorable as that would be I'm pretty sure he can force them to come back if he can catch them. It's happened before.

I’m not surprised that a GOP representative would think he has the right to do such a thing. The fact that they’re trying to reverse the Voters’ Rights Act indicates they’re not concerned about upholding our Constitution anymore. 😳
