Why do some people think that you have to be religious to have morals? [Spirituality & Religion]

I don't need to have a religion in order to know the difference between right and wrong.
If the ONLY reason you don't go around committing serious crimes is because your God says not to, then you have some serious issues and it has nothing to do with religion.

Religious people have been taught one way and get uncomfortable with others that live their lives the way they want to. But I agree, religion is a guide for some, and for others a tool to bludgeon others with. Shame really and kinda misses the point of the God they follow.

Some people can't see that morals come from culture and within ourselfs but religious people get there from god. If your fear of hell or god punishing you is the only thing preventing you from doing wrong. You are evil to begin with

Most religious people just preach morals and dont live by em in fact d louder they preach the less they seem ta have

NaturallyPeculiar · 26-30, F
@CinnamonWorlds: Certainly not by using the excuse of not doing something simply because fearing God.

[c=#7700B2]@NaturallyPeculiar: But that's not what I was asking, honestly out of curiosity. A person with a religion has some guidelines or rules about what's right and what's wrong; where do your distinctions come from?[/c]

@CinnamonWorlds: Most of my family is not religious. My dad is the only one who considers himself religious. However my dad believes being religious and having morals is not the same thing. He does not strictly follow rules if he thinks it will harm someone- including ones from religion. I was raised in a "do what you want as long as you do no harm" way and when I was older I was given the independence to set my own morals based on things I learned from others and or the culture around me.
The point isn't even about that. There's nothing wrong with being religious or non religious.
The thing is, some- not all- religious people think those without religion/their specific religion do not have morals when they themselves don't do certain things not because they have morals, but because they fear punishment from God.
I have no fear of God, yet I don't go around thinking about harming people just because.
Morals..?

Ask the many pastors that have been exposed for everything from affairs to kink.....

Religion has long been used to control people.
Lynda70 · F
@Jack4054: That's the primary purpose of the organized religions like christianity.

You're right, but there's a caveat. God made us with understanding of right and wrong... so even unbelievers have that, even if they don't know the source of it.
NaturallyPeculiar · 26-30, F
@Djce45: People aren't born knowing the difference between right and wrong. Just like people aren't born knowing how to love or hate. These things are taught.

We are going to partially disagree. Some of it, maybe most of it, is taught. But a sense of right and wrong... one is born with that.

@Djce45: An inate sense of right and wrong has nothing to do with any mythical being you call "god" because it doesn't exist.

The only thing that keeps me from killing someone else is the very slim chance of being caught.
