Christians: Do you think you have a superior moral code to that which an atheist may achieve without god? [Spirituality & Religion]

Please explain your answer.
Speedyman · 70-79, M
What lies at the heart of Christianity is not a moral code but forgiveness and a restoration back to a relationship to a loving God. Those who see it terms of a moral code miss the fundamental point.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@Speedyman You’re now confounding cosmology and abiogenesis and English literature.

Weren’t we talking about evolution by natural selection?

In any event, aren’t you simply saying here that the best way forward is to just make up stuff?
Sharon · F
@newjaninev2 The creationists' argument is illogical because it attempts to explain the existence of a complex system by postulating an even more complex one. They claim Atheists believe "nothing can make something" but they can't explain the origin of their hypothetical "creator". Simply saying it always existed renders the postulation unnecessary as one could simply say the universe has always existed. An unnecessary postulate is even more illogical.

@Sharon Precisely!

Christianity really doesn't have a moral code let alone a superior one. As a Christian I view morality in the sense of a owners manual. The manufacturer has given us all kinds of information about how we are to use the body we have been given. When we don't follow the owner's manual we encounter hardships. Maybe not personally but those around you do suffer.
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@hippyjoe1955 Yep, deferring to authority was the done thing. I remember my father was aghast at the number of times that I changed jobs because he was of the opinion that, once you got employed, you stayed with your employer as long as you could and did what you were told. Interestingly, both my sons have been in the same jobs for years, although one of them has recently changed.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
My sons are all tradesmen and have stayed in their trades while expanding their skills and training. I have several degrees and prefer to work wit the homeless.
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@hippyjoe1955 I've done quite a few things over the years and find that I'm now returning to my original training in fitting and turning, but only as a hobby, not a profession. My longest job was as a Parole Officer for about 17 years. I like to tell people that I was in gaol for 15 years and on Parole for two lol.
InvaderNice · 26-30, M
No. I think atheists are perfectly capable of developing a moral code.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
I can't answer this because I'm not a Christian and I mainly support evolutionary morality.
Carazaa · F
@SatanBurger So what's evolutionary morality? I haven't heard that term before! 🙂
Carazaa · F
A born again Christian's values are opposite the world's values.

Christians want to please Jesus who's values are being thankful for everything, loving everyone even our enemies, crucifying the flesh, being content, and putting God first in our life.

In contrast the values of this world focuses on self, like respecting oneself, fighting for ones rights, being proud, working hard, and accumulating wealth. I think non Christians can be loving and have good morals, but they live for this world, not the next. I think Christian values in general are superior because of our thankfulness to God for everything, and treating others the way we want to be treated, regardless how we are treated.

Jesus says "If anyone loves the world the truth of the Father is not in them" 1 John 2:15
@Carazaa

Hmm. That doesn't sound superior to me but i don't think there's any room there for a debate.

@AgapeLove I take issue with your statement “Your standard Christian probably is morally superior”. Loving their enemies? How? By damning them to eternal suffering? Giving to charity through fear of reprisal? That’s not charitable, that’s akin to blackmail. Do what I tell you or you’ll suffer eternally.

A secular morality is by far superior. An atheist can do all the good things Christians can whilst not having to ram the Bible down peoples throat. An atheist will do good not because they fear hell, but because it’s simply the right thing to do. Which would you rather be the foundation of good; a reasoned and logical assessment of our actions and their consequences, or an outdated ethical code which happens to condone slavery, beating slaves, treating women as objects, forcing women to marry their rapist and so on?

Your everyday Christian may not condone any of that, but the book which they use as the basis of their morality certainly does, and that’s a big problem.

I have nothing to prove. Im here to answer pikachu's question alone.

Wisdom, kindness, power, money this is all garbage without love. Love is the most essential part.

The jewish people knew their bibles inside and out and back around again. They still stuck christ to the cross.

There are 2 commands that sum up all the rules.

1. Love God with all your everything.
2. Love thy neighbor like thyself.

As most christians point outthrough behavior. They do not follow those rules therefore are hypocrites.
Carazaa · F
@Tarxarin All Christians are hypocrites?
Speedyman · 70-79, M
You are misunderstanding. The first thing that Christian recognises is that they need forgiveness . Without recognising the need forgiveness we cannot become a Christian. As Christians we know we are imperfect. As Jesus said he did not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance @Tarxarin

Since it says in the NT that God has written the law in all mens hearts,no
@SW-User

Fair enough. Although he appears to have written it in very tiny writing for some of us lol

And some who know Christian ethics ignore them Some think the point of the prodigal son is the erring son.but look at his brother's outrage that the son is welcomed back as if he never left.
OggggO · 36-40, M
Since atheism has no specific moral code, that's impossible to answer.
@OggggO

Well good point. I will rephrase my original question to be reflective of what i mean.
