Are you worried about Brexit?

The news just seems to get worse. The UK economy is slowing compared to the EU and the Conservative politicians we send to Brussels only only now coming to terms with the complexity of the negotiating process. They still seem to harbour an exaggerated view of Britain's power. The EU has a combined economy of over five times our size and they will not want Britain to be followed by others. Hence our largest trading partner have every interest not to cut a good deal.

Thereasa May's actions have been beyond ridiculous. There was no need to trigger article 50 (the Bill to leave) so early and that has reduced the time frame for deals, further weakening Britain's position. She then called an election, which reduced her time, her majority and her credibility.

May's current position is that 'no deal is better than a bad deal'. No Thereasa, no deal is worse than any other deal. WTO trading terms have large tariffs and everything from our legal system to airport rules would be thrown into chaos. Britain's negotiating team includes Boris Johnson, David Davis and Liam Fox. All are euro-skeptics and by definition the least interested in the details and culture of the rules they are supposed to be negotiating. They are up against a highly trained a professional EU team backed by the united will of member states. The clueless Liam Fox has said that we can replace EU trade with our ex-colonies and that we are becoming a geography free world. Well an email might travel faster than the speed of sound but a cargo ship does not and this pathetic post-imperial fantasy of Britain as a great power should fool nobody.

FYI I don't even like the EU. It has a huge democratic deficit and I have lots of reasons to be against the single currency. That does not mean that leaving the EU now and on these terms will not be a complete disaster, whatever your ideology. I backed Remain for one reason only; pragmatism. That is something which our current Government conspicuously lack.

I don’t like it. But since I am not a UK citizen, I don’t really have the right to say anything.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@SmartKat No. Say what you like. I confess, that I do talk about US politics sometimes. 😇
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
No not worried about brexit there is a big whole world out there, I just get fed up with all them remainers who can not accept a democratic vote, and will do everything they can to see us fail then can say we told you so, eu has had enough out of the UK, and only reason they want us is to keep there gravy train, London is major capital will survive out of eu
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Nyloncapes Yes very much so. I am Labour Party member and Corbynista.
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
Was you shocked at how well he is doing now and how well he did at last election, after his begining as leader
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Nyloncapes Yes he is doing great
TheCoolestCat · 31-35, M
nah ill be happy just as long as we dont pay that 100 billion the eu are looking for
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@MethDozer Whatever the ethics, Britain is in a weak negotiation position following Brexit. Not all politicians are admitting it but there is a tacit agreement we will have to pay if we want trade deals.
MethDozer · M
@Burnley123 Y'all will be okay. I understand your concerns and such, but the Brits never stay down for long.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@MethDozer I hope you are right. All the best

I wish I could help, but I'm USAian. We're pretty screwed, too.
I think that Britain made a massive mistake voting to leave the EU. The NHS is propped up by Asian Doctors and blaming immigrants for taking low skilled jobs is misguided at best. They need the relaxed VISA standards to get high skilled labor into the domestic markets.

The EU provided that. I'm very worried about The Brexit and it's effects.
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
Burnley I have no problem with immigration as long as it is controlled, we in the UK can not keep taking thousands in every year , we can not cold with that amount every year
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Nyloncapes The NHS needs more workers and a lot of farms need seasonal workers too. Our immigration has never been uncontrolled. Also, Brexit won't change s**t about that. I think you are wrong and fear we won't agree. You seem like a nice guy though so I wish you well.
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
Yes Burnley lies on both sides of the party's when Brexit referendum was going on, yes your right they want to try and make an example , so no one else dares to leave, this is a great country ,and France ,Germany, would not want to stop trading with us,
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Nyloncapes They won't stop trading with us but they will make us pay to do so. I don't like the situation either. The Remain side told lies but the leave arguments were based entirely on lies.
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
Our negotiors Burnley are pathetic spineless and gutless, they have let EU walk all over us, fact the EU want our money that was our ace up our sleeve and we never played it
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Nyloncapes They are more powerful than us though. The EU has an economy over 5 times of ours and they want to punish us for leaving. They don't wanna give us such a bad deal it screws them over too but not such a good deal that other countries wanna leave. It's in their interests and TBF we would probably do the same in their position.

I don't like our negotiators either but the real problem is they (and the Brexit campaign) promised things that they know they cannot deliver. They know there won't be more money for the NHS and they also know that we can't stop freedom of movement and keep free trade with the EU.
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
So we make them pay to trade with us , works both ways, it is in the best interest of EU and us , but we should be trading with the rest of the world,
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Nyloncapes We will trade with the rest of the world too but we have to trade a lot with Europe because they are so much closer. Everywhere else has over ten times the shipping costs. Like I say, they will still trade with us but make us pay. It's inevitable. I have to go now but wish you well.
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
Ok Burnley , been nice having a debate with you,and hope to chat again
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
Phoenix, go up London where I work, and every building site all foreign getting paid £70 a day , and English workers can't get employed, I know for first hand
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Nyloncapes I live in London and I teach primary school children. Most of them come from immigrant backgrounds and are poor. I don't blame them for wanting a better life for themselves. I blame years of Tory policy which means that there are not enough good jobs to go round.
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
Burnley farmers want immigrants for cheap labour , yes we probably won't agree , but nice to debate about this, in a polite and friendly manner with you, and respect our different views
