G7 leaders agree to back a global corporate tax of at least 15%

I an skeptical about its practical effects, but it is one of the very few decisions that I agree must be taken on a global scale.

What is important for me is that corporations should be forced to pay tax where they do business. I remember a few years ago, Starbucks, which operated hundreds of coffee shops all over the UK, did not even pay tax in the UK!

@Mugin16 Even more outrageous charity. Typical coloniser (America) attitude.

@Cierzo Since then, I have never spent a single penny, cent or Rappen in a Starbucks store. I boycott them.

I think it will kill companies that overextended to return to the United States, under Trump's tax reduction incentive. 15% across the board is a lot higher than some of them paid in 2019 and 2020.

It's going to kill Ireland.

@Cierzo That's cold. Really icy cold. Nasty. The corporations won't suffer as much as the PEOPLE who will go hungry...lose their jobs and may be even their homes.

@4meAndyou People working for big tech corporations are part of the problem. Would you feel pity for the soldiers of an army invading your country when they lose their jobs?
4meAndyou · F
@Cierzo People are people...and the employees of big tech are not soldiers.

Silly people have no idea that corporations do not pay taxes. Taxes are a cost of doing business and as such are marked up and charged to the consumer.
Cierzo · M
@hippyjoe1955 That would be a problem is corporations sold necessary goods and services, but this decision is aimed at big tech.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Cierzo So big tech operates for free?
And once implemented corporations will downsize, raise the cost of goods, which in turn will raise unemployment and drive more people into poverty. 👍
Cierzo · M
@stratosranger It is aimed at big tech businesses, and bearing in mind the profile of most workers there, no pity at all.

15% is far too low
Khenpal1 · M
@Cierzo It will not work, no way to force others on tax .
Cierzo · M
@Khenpal1 Countries like Ireland that have been robbing others with their ridiculous low corporate taxes are those that deserve economic sanctions, not Russia or Iran.
Khenpal1 · M
@Cierzo Not much difference for Ireland as per today 12.5 % and 15 % later on.

They can only suggest, not mandate.

I'm sure the poor will end up paying for it.
