Would people still keep working forty hour weeks if we socialize medical care , housing and the internet?

If it didn't cost your whole salary to live, What keeps you working? Do people live even if there's no job to keep them busy?

It would take time, but many people would vacation first, then a certain cluster would do what they have always dreamt of, others would work for self esteem, other for maintains health or sanity, but it would be nice to see families actually spend time with each other with out all the hassle that most families go thru . Hmmm it would take a decade to adjust and for everyone to find the right fit or lifestyle... meanwhile lots of people having the chance to decide their purpose. An equal amount of good and bad would come of it, it would look different, but ultimately people feel inspired or defeated. It’s just a choice. Like right now, I have to type fast and all my sentences go with out commas or periods because my lunch is over and I can only hope you pause aT the right parts. It would be nice not to feel rushed!

This is bait.

But...let me ask you this: Your question assumes the desired state is to be working. Why so? Who does it benefit? What's the merit of working for working's sake? Are there higher pursuits than working? Why would everyone's dial be set the same for feeling 'busy?'
@Graylight It definitely does play into the very dated protestant work ethic trope.

I enjoy my job, I work >40 hours a week and enjoy public healthcare

Paying my bills is not my motivation to work the same way sex isn't my motivation for entering a relationship
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
@Mindful I wouldn't say I'm intrinsically motivated, I am fortunate to do something I love which allows me certain freedom.

If circumstance were different, and I worked at a job I absolutely hated, then my outlook on this could probably be very different.
Mindful · 56-60, F
Yes, you are very fortunate to do what you love... and that is why some people do work greater than 40/hrs/wk@EuphoricTurtle I’m guessing that is part of your Euphoria, but what is the turtle aspect?
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
@Mindful The turtle aspect is how I enjoy that euphoria....slowly. The same way your favourite meal should not be devoured in record time, it should be savoured.
People probably could but there is literally no reason why anyone should. The 40 hour week was created in the 1800s and technology has evolved alot. The problem is the people who control the tech and the economy use it to undermine the majority to maximize the profits of a tiny minority.

They do all over the world.
They live in other people's houses, creative rent free places and in groups. Many are super ethical and do great things, for art, community, other people and the world.

Yeah, too many live to pay the rent and never notice something's wrong.

Yes. And UBI.

If the Internet didn’t supply a generous supply of outrage, would all the trolls die?
@JoeyFoxx ok

but the question was about work in America and my answer is people would work more on better stuff.
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@Elevatorpitches no. it wasn't
@JoeyFoxx oh puh...leeeezey

Meaning-jackers are not welcome in my world. You don't like socialism that's clear. But don't take out your little problem on ME
In some cases, absolutely. Some people enjoy their work so much that they give everything to it. The money is incidental.
