@QuixoticSoul The argument was to "preserve the system" which might have worked if they cleaned up the regulations and enforced standards. But they went with business as usual, setting themselves up for the second GFC we are about to have. I can see why there was a rush to get this in place with a different thinker like Obama coming. He may have chosen to do something like have the US govt step into the market and buy stock to support the prices of worthwhile businesses, then take director positions to make them accountable. (We wouldnt want that in America) then sell the holdings back into the market as the crisis passed and the market recovered. No taxes would have been necessary and those who took the profit would have taken the losses.
