Without oversight on private sales at the federal level, background checks are pretty useless.
There isn’t even a federally mandated ID check for private gun sales - nor any meaningful way to track who sold what to whom. Shit’s a complete free for all.

@redredred I'd rather be the person I am than an old, paranoid, delusional, petrified man like you who needs massive firepower at his side to get through a single day. Cowering in the corner trying to decide how much firepower is needed to go to the grocery store, in case another white supremacist decides to act out on his hatred and you're caught in the crossfire. The world is a dangerous place. Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid.
A psychiatrist could have a field day exploring your paranoia and delusions of grandeur.

@pagandad You have the right to own a firearm for protection. You do not have an absolute right to own any firearm of your choosing. Even Justice Scalia agreed with this point in the Heller decision.
You guys can go through life petrified of what might happen. I choose to live life, not cower behind my firearms.

Not sure background checks are needed. As I read the 2A it is a right of all citizens.

@katielass Sounds good to me. Right now, it's much easier to buy a gun than get an abortion.

The problem is background checks do nothing but inconvenience the law abiding. They do nothing to stop one bent of doing harm. We have had background checks for years. How many shootings did they prevent? The first one I remember, where the shooter failed one, was the recent Texas shooter, and he still got a gun. A gun shop near me was broken into....they caught the guys, this time. They had about 20 AR's and twice that number of handguns loaded up when arrested. They were greedy...going back for more when they got caught.
I doubt a background check would have stopped the end users of those from getting weapons.

The constitution covers ALL states, not just the ones who can read. lol

Sounds good. I'm not sure why that isn't the case already. Your driver's license and marriage certificate from one state are recognized by all other states; you don't have to reapply when you move. I don't see why gun permits would be any different. Article IV, Section 1: "Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State." Recognizing this in exchange for universal background checks would be a great deal.

I think they’re make it harder to obtain a gun. I don’t know if I’m in favor of that.

@Spoiledbrat I sold guns at retail for a major sporting goods company. the background check takes 1/2hour to complete here in a very gun-unfriendly state.
I like the idea of a compromise, but reciprocity on carry permits doesn't sound so good to me.

Added with decriminalized silencers and many automatic weapons pending a permit
