Why does the Swastika get more hatred and censorship over the Hammer and Sickle?

Both symbols were the emblems of nations that caused great atrocities. However you see far more censorship is hate for the Swastika and SS emblem than you do for the Hammer and Sickle. The Soviet Union has caused far more death and even more so with the rise of communist powers in our history than Nazi Germany ever did.

However today you only see the Swastika used by inbred rednecks while the Hammer and sickle can be seen on the shirts, buttons, bumper stickers, and beanies of edgy skinny high schoolers or young adults in college.

Either we accept our history as the human race and by censoring them both or not get worked up about either.

What are your thoughts?

Motive matters. It's why first degree murder is considered a greater crime than manslaughter.

The Holocaust was the attempted destruction of an entire race of people and wiped out 2/3 of European Jews. That's an incredible evil.

The Holodomor was a very different kind of incredible evil - it was a byproduct of industrialization. The Great Famine in China was a similar result. Mass deaths in order to industrialize.

You also can't compare one country over ten years to multiple countries over a century. Different scales. Capitalism also has its very, very long list of deaths at the hands of chasing money and should be included in that discussion.

That doesn't diminish Soviet crimes, but it does
contextualize them.

Also, if you talk to a modern day communist and a modern day Nazi (and we'll say full 14/88 Stormfront type) and compare their visions, the Nazi's is invariably a lot bloodier.

[@624254,CountScrofula] motive matters indeed.

Because Hitler killed 6 million of one particular race while attempting to conquer the world whereas Stalin killed 20 million indiscriminately and stayed in his own territory.
QuixoticSoul · 36-40, M
[@902747,Zaphod42] Well, not quite in his own territory. But he also killed way less than 20 million, too.
Prior to the fall of the USSR and the archival revelations, some historians estimated that the numbers killed by Stalin's regime were 20 million or higher
is what we learned in history when I was younger.
After the USSR fell, evidence from the Soviet archives also became available, containing official records of 799,455 executions (1921–1953),[7] around 1.7 million deaths in the Gulag[8][9] some 390,000[10] deaths during kulak forced resettlement and up to 400,000 deaths of persons deported to Forced settlements in the Soviet Union during the 1940s[11] – with a total of about 3.3 million officially recorded victims in these categories.[12] The deaths of at least 5.5 to 6.5 million[13] persons in the famine of 1932–33 are sometimes, but not always,[2][14] included with the victims of the Stalin era.
is what I just learned looking this up, lol

[@902747,Zaphod42] They're still massive as fuck numbers 🤷‍♂️

The Swastika was popular before the Nazis existed. It was originally a symbol of Good Fortune and a mark of protection.

Just as the SS lightning bolts are the Norse Runic symbol for S in the Elder Futhark [@510099,Mulder]

[@958504,TakingBackMidgard] information I did not know
TakingBackMidgard · 26-30, M
Yep there is actually a movement of people who practice Norse Paganism, Asatru, Odinism, who formed something I think called Pagans against White Supremacy. Because a lot of Neo Nazis and the Kirk use symbols such as the Valknut and Thor’s hammer.

So basically today’s Vikings are pissed[@510099,Mulder]

If someone has to explain it to you, I would say you got issues.
Why don't you glorify the time Napoleon wanted to conquer the whole Europe or centuries where Muslims occupied the Iberian peninsula (Portugal and Spain)? (If you so want to accept your history)
Why don't you honor the filthiness of the bubonic plague?
QuixoticSoul · 36-40, M
[@492052,Emortal] At least Napoleon did a fuckton of good in the course of his conquests - bringing rule of law and end of feudalism to half of Europe.

[@492052,Emortal] this isn’t me asking a question asking why I make these questions for others to discuss amongst each other. Just to make things clear.

The basic difference is that you can have authoritarian left, authoritarian right, authoritarian theocracies, authoritarian monarchies etc, etc - even authoritarian democracies ala Singapore - but that's not inherently required or implicit in any of them. They can all be practiced in a relatively benign fashion, and even with some level of democracy. Being a complete dick to people is not really the point, even if it happens.

But Nazism is something else.

If Stalinism had a particular symbol, it would be similarly reviled.
TakingBackMidgard · 26-30, M
[@580625,QuixoticSoul] usually what I see is “the one true race” being the deal breaker which I get totally. To me both are bad as both have led to the death of tens of millions. And we haven’t even touched the subject of Maoism
pikminboy · 26-30, M
i didnt knew the soviet union killed people . you should tell me about it

Swastika= national socialism.
Hammer and sickle= international socialism.

Those who hate the former and are fine with the latter are those who oppose nationalism and embrace internationalism/globalism.

Most media do, that's why the promote the 'nazism=absolute evil, communism= not so evil' idea.
Graylight · F
One is the symbol for an economic model. Iy was used by Stalin but embodies much more than his crimes. The swastika stands for one particular party whose very ideology was nationalism and hate. We were also Russia's ally in the last great war.
